Sweet soup or 糖水 (táng shǔi) is a very traditional type of Chinese desserts.  Hence, they’re typically served after dinner and are seldom heavy in texture.  Besides being delicious, they usually will have some medicinal benefits.  For example, red bean soup is good for kidneys and sweet potato and ginger sweet soup is good for digestion.  The sweet soup recipe that I’m sharing is Asian Pear Peach Resin Sweet Soup 雪梨桃膠糖水 (xǔe lí táo jīao táng shǔi).

Asian pears are high in vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium.  They are mildly sweet and a little tangy.  They can soothe a sore throat or cough.  So it's not surprising that they can help to extinguish the “heatiness” in your body (heatiness can lead to constipation, breakouts, constipation and irritability).

Peach resin or peach gum is the resin found on the bark of wild peach trees.  They also have a beautiful yet melancholic name, “peach blossom tears” in China.  You can buy peach resin from Chinese herbal stores or even in some Chinese Supermarkets.  The use of peach resin for medicinal purposes dates back thousands of years.  Chinese people used it to treat digestive issues, skin issues as well as detoxify the blood.

Contrary to popular belief, it does not contain any collagen but is said to have properties to beautify the skin.  Collagen can only be found in animals. However, peach resin contains the amino acids that can help promote collagen production and absorption. The only downside to using peach resin is the cleaning.  You'll need to use tweezers or a fish bone remover to help remove the debris that was trapped in the resin.  I actually find it quite satisfying when I see all the debris that I was able to remove from the resin. Or is that just me?! Going through and removing debris from 10 grams of resin will take around 30 minutes.  But did I mention that it can beautify your skin?  Totally worth it!!

My Asian Pear Peach Resin Sweet Soup 雪梨桃膠糖水 recipe is very straight forward.  Only 4 ingredients…Asian pear, peach resin, water and honey.  You can have it hot or cold and perfect for the whole family!

Asian Pear Peach Resin Sweet Soup 雪梨桃膠糖水

I wanted to make this Asian Pear Peach Resin Sweet Soup as simple as possible. But if you have time, you can add a few more things:
• Lotus nuts
• White fungus
• Figs
• Honey dates
• Goji berries
Instead of honey, you can also use cane rock sugar or coconut sugar.
After you’ve cooked it, you can add some dried cranberries and coconut jelly for added flavor and texture!
