Tornado Omelet Rice with Meat Sauce 肉醬旋風蛋包飯 (ròu jìang xúan fēng dàn bāo fàn) is Omurice in Korean and Omuraisu in Japanese. It was first seen in the western restaurants in South Korea and Japan in the 1970’s. I don’t believe there is a clear origin, but you can find this dish all over the world.
Even though my son is now 12 years old, I’m still finding ways to make his food interesting. I find that he has a better appetite when he likes the presentation. But of course, it has to taste good too! The first time I made this, I messed up the egg. So I covered the broken part of the egg with the meat sauce. I told him that this is a Volcano Omelet Rice! And then when the egg didn’t break, I called it the Tornado Omelet Rice…..he thought it was so cool!

Whether it’s a tornado or volcano, this is a great dish that’s guaranteed to impress your family. It’s healthy and easy too! It’s also something that you can whip up depending on what’s in your pantry. You could easily convert leftovers or canned soup into the sauce to accompany the omelet rice.
I made this dish using left-over butter chicken once and my son loved it. Try draping the egg over fried rice and then add ketchup and Japanese mayo on top. Or, you could just do a sunny-side-up egg on top and it becomes a Hong Kong Café dish, Minced Beef and Egg on Rice. There are unlimited possibilities to change it up with this dish.
I serve this Tornado Omelet Rice with Meat Sauce 肉醬旋風蛋包飯 dish with a specialty Hong Kong drink…Horlick and Ovaltine Milk (for quick history lesson of these two delicious drinks, check it out here). Which is just 1 heaping tablespoon of Horlick, 1 heaping tablespoon of Ovaltine, 2 teaspoons sugar, 3 tablespoons evaporated milk and 250ml hot water. Yummmmm! Instructions for the tornado egg (read all the steps before starting. Steps 2 and 3 need to be done in a fairly fast speed:
- Crack and beat 2 eggs
- In a non-stick pan, add 1 tbsp oil, pour the beaten eggs and when the egg is starting to cook, swirl the egg around to form a large circle
- Use a pair of chopsticks and gather 2 opposite sides of the egg together with the chopsticks ending up being 1” apart. It will have the shape of a bow-tie
- Do not remove the chopsticks from the egg and gently spin the chopsticks so that egg is also spinning to make it into a circle shape. Use the edge of the pan to help shape the egg
- Once the egg is cooked, slide it onto the rice
- Spoon the meat sauce around the rice and egg
If the egg doesn’t look nice, then put some meat sauce on top of the egg to replicate an erupting volcano - Repeat for the second serving
- Add chopped parsley and serve
